What a super fun lesson this was! We started by choosing a colour palette and painting a background in our art journal. Then we created a lot of small pattern papers. At first I found it tough to design so many patterns, because I don’t do something like that very often. I think I don’t have enough imagination, but once I get started, it works much better than I expected. And it’s also great to do!

Choosing a certain colour palette and holding on to it is something I learned from this lesson. It really creates cohesion and it really becomes a patchwork rug instead of all separate things.

I find all the assignments that Luz gives surprising, because I don’t think of them myself. This is a lesson you can so as often as you want, choosing a different colour palette each time, or choosing just graphic patterns, or just botanical patterns. The variation possibilities are endless, so you’ll never get bored with this assignment. Thank you very much, Luz!

Materials you need for the class 'Patchwork Patterns'

For this class have created a list of required materials and a list of suggested materials that you don't really need, but are much fun to work with. Of course, use what you have and don't feel like you have to buy everything!

List of required materials

  • An art journal or another substrate to work on, like mixed-media paper, watercolour paper, a canvas or a wooden panel. I use the Dina Wakley media journal, the large edition. You could still go for the small edition or the printed ledger journal;
  • We create our patterns on tiny pieces of different paper, like sheet music paper, old book pages, shoe box paper, silk paper, rice paper, straw fiber paper, old notebook paper. I recommend you to work with paper that's thin.
  • Acrylic paint in the colours of your chosen palette and of the quality you can afford;
  • Gel medium, I use the matte version from Talens Amsterdam (080), you can use it from whatever brand you want;
  • Various brushes, especially the broad brush, the spalter is a favourite of mine to fill paper backgrounds;
  • A brayer or roller to create a stunning background for your project substrate. I use most of the time an Essdee roller;
  • Mark making tools like acrylic markers (Posca, Amsterdam, those are in the same colours as the paint from this brand!) fineliners (for black I use Micron, the white Uniball pen is one of my favourites), alcohol based markers, etc.;
  • A palette, a tin with water, kitchen towels, wet tissues,

List of suggested materials

  • Already painted pieces of paper, for example gelli prints;
  • Pre-patterned pieces of paper;
  • Fabrics, threads, yarn, wool and lace;
  • Extra mark making tools like Comic Acrea markers, colour pencils, Derwent Inktense pencils and a brush pen, Neopastels and other oil pastels;
  • Hairdryer to dry your work in between;
  • Something to protect your table and clothes;
  • Daylight lamps.
