Collage is fast, intuitive and fun — and it’s a great way to hone your design skills and create a body of mixed-media art. These six lessons originally aired as part of Year of the Collage, and we work with found and altered papers in and out of a sketchbook. We’ll start with some exercises to get you thinking about the way YOU do collage, then move to playing with texture and cut shapes, adding people and animals, and creating large paintings by lesson 6.
Like all of our classes, the learning always goes in both directions, and the community and things we learn from everyone out there are what make the whole experience special. We hope you can join us!

Class Itinerary
Lessons are prerecorded and you will have instant and forever access:
Lesson 1: Two Sketchbook Exercises
In this first class we will work with two very different exercises: a more structured grid and a series of “random-placement” collages that are more free-flowing. Which do you prefer?
Lesson 2: Moon Paper Transparency Collages
Making collage paper is one of the most satisfying things about working with collage!n this lesson you’ll do it a little differently by mono-printing on transparency paper! Then you’ll create a series of garden-themed collages.
Lesson 3: Adding People
A fun oil pastel transfer technique combined with magazine-infused packing tape = fun and fabulous results!
Lesson 4: Adding Animals
Make some animals “mid-air” and see how that changes your finished creatures. We will also create a mixed-media paintinthen pull out the gel medium for some painterly animals.
Lesson 5: My House Dollhouse
Take photographs from your own home and incorporate them into these imaginary houses.
Lesson 6: Going Big!
Gather up all of your scraps for this large painting on wood.

Supplies
Please note! All supplies are suggestions and most can be substituted with materials you have on hand. Really! General supplies: – Found paper such as old letters, ledgers, books; scrapbooking paper, wrapping paper, tissue paper, hand-painted paper, imagery from books, magazines, old calendars, etc. – glue stick – matte medium – scissors and/or exacto knife – a selection of pencils and pens; various markers and oil pastels (what you have is fine) – watercolors and acrylic paints – brushes – a sketchbook with stiff paper – 5-8 pieces of transparency film (Note: you can use whatever kind of transparency paper you can find, or, really, any “plastic sleeve” kind of thing [like from the office supply store]… anything that is not absorbent like paper will work for experimenting… even wax paper, tissue paper or packing tape!). – Gelli® Plate – brayer – several sheets of larger watercolor or bristol board, about 9″x12″ – a wood panel, about 18″x24″
