Beyond Colour Fields

Create sparkling abstract paintings with layering and printing techniques!

Abstract painting class
‘Beyond Colour Fields’

Create layered abstract paintings with me!

In this class I’ll reveal the secrets of painting a layered and balanced abstract painting with acrylics. Are you afraid to start with a blank canvas? Do you get stuck in the middle part? Don’t you know whether your painting is completed or not? If the answer to one of these questions is ‘Yes’, then join me on this wonderful adventure.

I will take you with me into my studio and show you the full process of two pieces, from start to finish. To get you in the painting mood, we gather inspiration and do some preparations. It’s important to take time to figure out which colours you want to work with, to sketch some compositions and to play with some printing techniques. After that you will have enough confidence and knowledge to dive into the painting process. I’ll show you how you could create a rich, layered background, how to work out your composition and add some wonderful printing techniques.

“I enrolled in the Pattern Playing course of Brave Art Academy. I watched the full set of videos, then went to gather all my supplies and got to work. This class was so inspiring that I could not stop working at, or dreaming about, my art pieces for three days straight! Luz is an excellent teacher and I found her so aligned with my thinking – “it’s all about the process” and “know when to stop if it doesn’t add to the piece”! The course and workbook were so clear, of high quality, and so inspiring. Next time I will work with more muted colours and will work more on developing my patterns, although I was still very happy with my results. 😊 Thank you Luz.”

Getting great compositions in 5 steps

Composition is often the hardest part of creating a cohesive abstract painting. There are a lot of guidelines that you could follow. You could get a lot of insights and inspiration by looking closely at the work of other artists. In this class I will reveal how you can prepare yourself to get some wonderful compositions in 5 simple steps.

    3 Printing techniques

In this class I’ll introduce you to three printing techniques to add spectacular effects to your abstract painting. You start with taking a look in and around your home for items with texture. The good news is that many of those are (almost) for free! Think about packages, candle holders, placemats or even food…

Warning for your housemates: acrylic paint all over the place! 😉

    The more layering, the better!

The painting is a quest that demands you to find a balance between achieving unity and tension. Step by step, you’ll learn how you achieve a connection between multiple ‘fields’ and how you use your colour and composition optimally.

It may seem hard… but don’t worry. There are no failures! When you’re not really satisfied with a particular part, just add a new layer! You have nothing to lose; as our mission is to create layer by layer. In the class you can see me struggling, too. I keep saying to myself it will be allright in the end. I encourage you to take risks, make mistakes.. and all of a sudden… there will be magic!

Painting for all levels of experience

Whether you are an experienced artist searching for a fresh approach or have no art experience at all, this course is suitable for you! The lessons are designed to help you open up to new techniques, getting confidence in your own process and (re)discover the joy of painting.

List of Supplies for this Class

    Preparation

For the preparation stage of this class you will need a sketchbook or paper and charcoal to draw your composition. It’s good to have some artbooks and some printed images.

    Substrate

A substrate to work on, this could be a canvas, but you could also work on thicker paper (300 grams or more) or on plywood. I use a 40x40 size canvas and a smaller rectangular canvas.

    Painting items

In this class we work with acrylic paint. I use paint from the brand Winsor & Newton Galeria: MIxing White, Buff Titanium, Cadmium Yellow, Green Gold, Burnt Umber, Payne’s Grey and an undefined Red. From Royal Talens Amsterdam: Neutral Grey and Raw Sienna . Of course, use your own favourite colour palette!

To create a foundation or background, a brayer can give you a great start. At the moment, the Essdee brayer is my best friend. In this class I use the 4” soft brayer. You could also use a large flat brush (a spalter) to create your first foundation. I use brushes in various sizes and shapes. My favourite ones are from the Raphael series. You’ll need a (tear-off) palette and a water tin or jar and kitchen towels to clean your brushes.

    Printing items

I will encourage you to look for things in and around your home that provide texture. Of course, you are free to use premade stamps and stencils. But I am sure you could do it without those! A very handy item for stencilling though is the tampon brush.

    And finally...

At the end of the course you might need some mark making tools, such as markers, fineliners, pens or soft pastels.

    Don’t forget...

Something to protect your table and an apron to protect your clothes.
