Art Zines
Instructor: Erika Rier
5 Lessons
Pre-recorded, self paced. Initial “live” class dates: June 17-26, 2025
Hello!
I’ve been making ‘zines for over 30 years, and I think that they are one of the most wonderful ways to share your work… with loved ones AND strangers! When I started as a teenager, I would leave my zines, free and anonymous, all over town. These days I am working on as many as 10 intricate art zines at any given time, and publish 3-4 per year; I print, cut and bind the zines myself and sell them at art shows, in galleries and online.
In this fun class we’ll cover everything from brainstorming through planning, layout and adding some handcrafted details such as hand-cut pages and a gatefold, so that your art zine can be a truly unique publication.
Zine-making is a huge part of my life and I’m really excited to share the process with you!

Lesson 2: Make a Dummy
For our second class we’ll make a dummy, a blank version of our book, so that we can start figuring out page number, layout, and interactive aspects of our art zine.
Lesson 3: Drawing a Road Map
In this class we will start drawing a road map for our zine. This stage is known as storyboarding where we start to untangle the story and flow of our art zine.
Lesson 4: Making a Sentence
In this lesson we’ll set up our templates and get our pencil sketches down onto our final layout paper.
Lesson 5: Adding Color
In our final class we’ll draw our final spreads together and discuss considerations to take into account while creating these images.
